How to Navigate Complicated Grief

how-to-navigate-complicated-grief

For most of us grieving, while it may take time, we can ultimately recover, accept the loss, and move forward. For some, however, it can take a turn for the worse to become complicated grief or persistent complex bereavement disorder.

Characterized by an ongoing state of mourning that does not seem to go away even after a year and keeps one from healing, it is made worse by complications such as depression, suicidal thoughts or behaviors, significant sleep disturbances, and substance misuse.

Obviously, waiting this out should not be an option. And as your trusted provider of substance disorder treatment in Reynoldsburg, Ohio, we, at WCAP Counseling are listing down some of the ways you can navigate complicated grief.

  • Lean on a support system
You have people who care about you even when it feels like there aren’t. Seek them for support during these times.

However, if you don’t think you have people like these in your life, know that it is not too late to build new relationships or join a support group.

  • Consider doing counseling services or therapy
A therapist trained in grief counseling can help you navigate your intense and overwhelming emotions and help you be on a path to healing.
  • Take care of yourself even when you don’t feel like doing so
Be intentional about choosing healthy coping mechanisms. Eating healthily, exercising regularly, managing stress, and avoiding harmful habits are a good start.
  • Forgive yourself and pick yourself up again
If you find yourself caving on to the bad habits you had before to cope such as substance abuse, it’s never too late to undergo substance abuse counseling in Ohio.
