Tips in Supporting a Friend with OCD

Tips in Supporting a Friend with OCD

Being friends with someone suffering from obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) can be very difficult and emotionally draining, especially when you want to help but don’t know how to. Aside from the mental health therapy sessions your friend goes to, you, too, can help them in a number of small but sure ways in their daily lives. Here’s how.

  • Learn more.
Understanding your friend’s condition and situation is the first and most important step you can do to support them. You can do your own research, but, of course, a great way to truly understand your friend is to ask them yourself. Every person with OCD has different triggers and reactions. Know these factors about your friend, so you can help maintain a safe space for them.
  • Communicate clearly.
When you interact with your friend, make your words and intention clear and concise. People with OCD usually interpret words and actions at face value. So, lengthy explanations and seemingly vague actions can make them more uncertain and anxious.
  • Be patient.
Of course, this goes without saying, however, it is always worth it to reiterate this practice. Interacting with people with OCD can be frustrating as they will often ask the same questions multiple times and repeat mundane tasks obsessively. Iron your patience with your desire to empathize with your friend.
